The module will look at critical aspects of the industry including project management, income and royalties, legal, contractual and accounting elements, music formats, label management, software and hardware, music aggregation and streaming. In addition to gaining a 360-degree view of the industry, you will explore styles of music management and a range of interpersonal, emotional and entrepreneurial skills needed to survive and thrive in the dynamic landscape of popular music. He uses his experience and connections to bring you the latest in current industry practice. He uses his experience managing a record label to teach on label and rights management, music technology and more.

This module is concerned with the critical evaluation of entrepreneurial business structures and behaviours in the creative industries. The approach is interdisciplinary, and is designed to provide you with a solid introduction to media economics, social theory, and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Studying this module will see you gain an appreciation of strategic management for creating and sustaining organisational effectiveness.

Paula Hearsum, lecturer and researcher in media studies, with specialisms in popular music and journalism. Paula worked as a music journalist and continues to write for the wider press. She maintains a relationship between academia and media practice, developing innovative industry-relevant courses and national online educational resources. Her research has focused on the mediation of popular musicians’ deaths as way to consider dominant social discourses and narratives. This module explores your critical understanding of consuming and producing social media in personal and professional settings. In this module you will explore the role and use of photography in visual media.

You’ll produce a portfolio of work over the course of your studies, including essays, reports and evaluations of events and projects you’ve designed, planned and managed. You’ll be taught by staff who are all active practitioners or researchers in music, the arts or business.
