Wiltshire Jazz Academy, formerly known as Saturday Jazz, are monthly sessions for developing young jazz musicians led by Mike Daniels and visiting tutors from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Louise Dodds Quartet Scottish jazz vocalist Louise Dodds will be making her debut at The Vortex tonight performing songs from her latest album ‘The Story Needs an Ending’ as part of her UK tour. Released in March 2022, the album is a deeply personal collection of songs written and arranged by Louise, which are both moving and uplifting.
The regular slot offers students with hands-on experience in planning and presenting live performances to a highly diverse audience, from seasoned aficionados to casual music lovers. Our success in supporting students to develop their creative voices is reflected in the professional accomplishments of our graduates, who include many of London’s finest emerging jazz musicians. A recent collaboration with MOBO award-winning ensemble Empirical, themselves Trinity Laban Jazz alumni, saw students and professionals alike experimenting with traditional and contemporary approaches to jazz. The energy and dynamism of these young musicians characterises our commitment to innovative performance. Classes are practice-based, with focus on jazz harmony, rhythm, jazz history, arranging and composition, and coaching rhythm and horn sections. We celebrate the origins of jazz, with opportunities to study African, Brazilian and Cuban music, and we focus on shaping the jazz of the future by nurturing creative composition, and collaborative projects and concepts.
We provide music for all tastes, from those seeking an ambient accompaniment to a glass of wine in the magnificent grounds, to the jazz or blues aficionado hoping to get up close to star performers. Delicious baking from our stableyard cafe will be served in the tea tent; with locally roasted coffee brewed on our Gaggia coffee machine. There is a great range of food on the food lawn, with our vintage ice cream van, too. Arun Ghosh Award-winning clarinettist and composer Arun Ghosh makes an eagerly anticipated return to The Vortex, performing music from new album, Seclused in Light.

Since their formation in 2007, Empirical have steadfastly maintained their position as one of the UK’s most exciting jazz ensembles. Individual tuition is offered on bass, drums, flute, guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, voice and other instruments by agreement. Group classes focus on the rehearsal of material from a variety of genres under the jazz umbrella, including standard, contemporary and world repertoire.
Following the success of https://www.anatoliabrookline.com/ Time, the College has been working in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales to take our students and leading international artists on tour to arts venues across Wales, each term. The summer term culminates in a jazz festival at the College and both the festival and tour offer students a platform to showcase their work to new audiences and gain valuable professional experience. Previous headliners include Quercus, Jean Toussaint’s Roots and Herbs, Vento Em Maderia, Get the Blessing, John Taylor and Darius Brubeck Quartet. The department also regularly performs at jazz festivals across the UK, including London Jazz. Performance platforms include the hugely popular student-led Jazz Time sessions every Friday evening, attracting a large and loyal public audience.
